OIC Permanent Observer to the UN Meets a Team of Doctors Without Border on Rohingya Issue - 2017-02-28

Ambassador Mehdiyev, OIC Permanent Observer to the United Nations met with a team of Doctors without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres) on the issue of Rohingya.

During the meeting the ongoing situation of Rohingyas was discussed. The MSF side which included MSF Representative to the United Nations, MSF Operational Advisor, and MSF regional representative to ASEAN shared some information and observations related to the humanitarian and medical needs and challenges experienced first-hand by the MSF missions on the ground and briefed about their current medical projects in Rakhine, Shan, and Kachin states, the Thanintharyi region and in Yangon. 

Both sides xpressed their concern over the deteriorating situation, and underscored the need for development in that region and the fact that humanitarian situation has got worse than ever.  

The OIC Permanent Observer gave detailed information on their programs and activities related to the situation in Myanmar. He also briefed them about the OIC activities and its cooperation with other international bodies on this issue, and underscored the importance of the issue on the agenda of the OIC. He then explained about the activities of OIC Group of Ambassadors on Rohingyas in New York.

Ambassador Mehdiyev mentioned the issue of deferring the submission of the resolution on the situation in Myanmar to the Human Rights Council with the intention to give the government of Myanmar enough time to improve the situation on the ground but since the situation has not improved, the resolution could be submitted to the Human Rights Council by the member States. He also mentioned that the OIC will continue to follow the issue vigorously at all levels and stated that the OIC Group of Ambassadors on the matter in New York will follow their meeting with the president of Security Council by meetings with the president of General Assembly and the UN Secretary General.
