Thirty-sixth Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers
Held in Damascus, Syrian Arab Republic

Decided to support the following candidacies (Resolution No. 1/36-ORG on Candidacies for Positions at International Organizations):

Candidacy of Dr Ismail Alhaj Musa (Republic of Sudan) for membership of the UNESCO’s Executive Bureau.

Candidacy of H.E. Mr Farouq Hosni, Minister of Culture (Arab Republic of Egypt), for the post of Director General of UNESCO, for which elections are to be held in Paris in October 2009, after the expiry of the current Director General’s mandate.

Candidacy of the Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya for the chairmanship of the United Nations General Assembly in its sixty fourth session, for which elections are due to be held in New York in 2009.

Candidacy of the Republic of Togo for a non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for the period 2010 – 2011 for which elections are to be held in 2009 during the Assembly’s 64th ordinary session.

Candidacy of the Republic of Kazakhstan for membership of the Executive Board of the World Tourism Organization for the period 2007 – 2011, for which elections are to be held in Cartagena, Colombia, in November 2009.

Candidacy of the State of Qatar for membership of the Executive Council of the UN Development Programme – UN Fund for Population for the period 2010-2012, for which elections will be held by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) during its resumed Session in April/May 2009.

Candidacy of the State of Qatar for membership of the Social Development Committee from the 48th Session to 51st Session.

Candidacy of the State of Qatar for membership of the Executive Council of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for the period 2010-2012, for which elections will be held by UNECOSOC during its Resumed Organizational Session in April/May 2009.

Candidacy of the State of Qatar to host the third session of the States party to the UN Anti-Corruption Agreement, in the year 2009.

Candidacy of the State of Qatar to host the 25th Conference of the International Postal Union in 2012.

Candidacy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for a non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for the period 2010 – 2011, for which elections are to be held during the 64th Session of the UN General Assembly in 2009.

Candidacy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, on behalf of the Eastern European Group for a non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council, for the period 2012-2013, for which elections are to be held during the 66th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, in 2011.

Candidacy of the Republic of Azerbaijan on behalf of the East-European Group for the Chairmanship of the United Nations General Assembly for the year 2032, for which elections will be held during the 87th Session of the General Assembly in New York in 2032.

Candidacy of the Republic of Kazakhstan for a Non-Permanent Membership of the UN Security Council for the period 2011-2012 for which elections are to be held in October 2010 in New York.

Candidacy of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the membership of the UN Peace Building Commission for the period 2008-2010.

Candidacy of the State of Qatar to host the Olympic Games in 2016.

Candidacy of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania for a Non-Permanent Membership of the UN Security Council for the period 2012-2013.

Candidacy of Dr. Sima Samar (Islamic Republic of Afghanistan) for the post of High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Candidacy of the Republic of Kazakhstan for membership of UNESCO’s Executive Board, for which elections will be held during the latter’s ordinary session in October 2009, during the 35th Conference of UNESCO.

Candidacy of Amb. Papa Louis Fall (Republic of Senegal) for reelection to the UN Joint Inspection Unit, for which elections will be held during the 64th session of the UN General Assembly in 2009.

Candidacy of the Syrian Arab Republic for membership of the Executive Council of UNESCO and the following sub committees and Councils:
a - UNESCO Executive Council
b - Council of the International Bureau of Education
c - Intergovernmental Council on the Management of Social Transformation Programme (MOST)
d - Intergovernmental Committee for promoting the Return of Cultural property to its Countries of Origin or its Restitution in case of Illicit Appropriation.

Candidacy of the Arab Republic of Egypt for membership of the Executive Council of UNESCO in the period from 2009-2013, at the elections scheduled to take place in Paris in October 2009.

Re-nomination of Ambassador Anwer Kamal (Islamic Republic of Pakistan) for membership of the Committee against Racial Discrimination for the period from 2010-2013, at the elections to be held in January 2010 during the Conference of State parties to the Convention against Racial Discrimination in New York.

Candidacy of Dr. Taysir al-Nueimi (Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan) for membership of the Executive Council of UNESCO at the elections to be held in Paris in October 2009, during the 35th General Conference of UNESCO.

Candidacy of Mr. Joseph Ebole (Republic of Gabon) for the position of Assistant Regional Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), for Africa.

Candidacy of Burkina Faso for membership of the Executive Council of UNESCO at the elections to be held in Paris in October 2009, during the 35th General Conference of UNESCO.

Candidacy of Brigadier Saud Ibn Abdullah AlMahmoud (State of Qatar) for membership of one of the vacant seats of the Executive Committee of the International Criminal Police (INTERPOL), for Asia and the Middle East, at the elections scheduled to take place during the 78th Session of the Assembly, in Singapore from 12 to 15 October 2009.

Candidacy of Dr. Mohammad Ibn Ghanim Al-Ali Al-Muadid (State of Qatar) for the position of the vice-President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, representing Asia, during the Federation’s General Assembly to be held in Nairobi, in November 2009.

Candidacy of the Republic of Niger for membership of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the elections to be held during the Board’s session in June 2009 and at the General Assembly to be held in Vienna, Austria, on 18 September 2009.

Candidacy of the United Arab Emirates to host the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy (IRENA) in the city of Masdar in Abu Dhabi to be submitted at the Agency’s second meeting to be held in June 2009, in the Arab Republic of Egypt.

Candidacy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for membership of Executive Council of the International Maritime Organization, category C, at the elections to be held during the Organizations General Assembly scheduled to take place in London from 9/11/2009-4/12/2009.

Candidacy of the Kingdom of Morocco for non-Permanent Membership in the United Nations Security Council for the period from 2012-2013.

Candidacy of the State of Qatar to host the Football World Cup Tournament in 2018 or 2022.

Candidacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran for membership of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO at the elections to be held during the 35th Session of the UNESCO’s General Conference in Paris in October 2009.

Candidacy of Mr. Nuruddin Amir (People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria) for membership of the United Nations Commission on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination elections to be held during the next meeting of the States parties to the International Convention on Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Candidacy of Ambassador Dani Ben Chaa (People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria) for the position of Director of the Organisation of the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons at the election to be held in October 2009.

Candidacy of the Republic of Burkina Faso to organize the 79th Annual Meeting of International Committee for Great Dams for 2011, during the 23rd Conference of this Organisation scheduled to be held in Brasilia from 22 to 29 May 2009.

Candidacy of Mrs. Saadia Baluir (Kingdom of Morocco) for membership of the Commission Against Torture for which elections will be held during the Conference of States parties to the Convention Against Torture in Geneva in October-November 2009.

Candidacy of Bosnia-Herzegovina Non-paramount to membership of the Security Council for 2010-2011.
61. Requests the Secretary General to follow up the implementation of this resolution and to submit a report thereon to the 37th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers.
